History

Libby Higgins (left front) founded Open Door Ministry in 1973. Murray Hastings (right) supported the community as their priest. He worked with Open Door from 1960 until 1994.  Evie Foulkes is pictured on the far left in the back.  She has served the ministry since 1985 retired in July, 2016.

The Open Door Ministry began in 1973 as a response to the requests for various kinds of assistance from individuals and families. It began very simply as a listening ear with a pot of coffee. Our payee program began when clients receiving disability checks would be out of funds by the 3rd or 4th of the month. The checks were being stolen or misspent. Libby Higgins started the payee program with the Social Security Administration sending the disability checks to Open Door to manage their money. We now have 65 clients with a waiting list. Our food pantry has grown dramatically and our welcome center is full every day. We serve a large hot meal three days a week.

JoAnn McIntosh became the current director in July 2016.  JoAnn is a Licensed Social Worker with many years experience working with families and individuals in both the Northern KY area and Hamilton County.  She has worked with the homeless of Cincinnati/Hamilton County for close to twenty years.

Open Door continues to see what the needs in the community are and how we can meet the needs of both singles and families including men, women and children.  The programs of Open Door would not exist without the help of the community and our volunteers.
